The Chalk Circle

Terra Taylor Knudson

The traditional tale of two opposing mothers pulling a child out of a chalk circle has been given a youthful update and looks beyond the darker aspects of the original to focus on the inherent values of teamwork, cultural and racial tolerance, equality, compassion and friendship. Rather than two mothers in conflict, it is the tale of two cultures: those from the Hills and those from the Sea, both fiercely competitive and desirous of a coveted golden statue. Sworn enemies, they have each been taught since childhood that the other is bad even dangerous. Yet, when circumstances arise that force them to work together each villager must face his or her own prejudice and learn to find the similarities among the differences. This piece offers an opportunity for a large number of youth to get into the act as they create the two villages and work together to bring the story, and its lessons, to life.
